What is a generator?
A generator is a stand-by appliance that is able to keep electricity running to your home in the event of a power outage. You will be able to continue to operate computers, heating and air conditioning systems, refrigerators, and other important appliances.
A generator converts mechanical energy to electric energy. A spinning shaft within the generator's engine produces a magnetic field through a coil, which will lead to electromotive force.
Choosing a generator:
A generator for your home can be mobile or stationary. Generators can run on gasoline, natural gas, diesel fuel, oil, and propane. Mobile generators that use gasoline are the least expensive, but they will have shorter run times, due to the need for refilling the generator's tank. If there are widespread outages or severe weather conditions, gas pumps may not even be optional. Natural gas is the best fuel for a stationary generator.
Generators range in size from an output of 1 kilowatt (kw) to more than 100 kw.
What type of fuel should I use?
You should make this decision based on what type of fuel is available in your local area. Your choice should revolve around what type of generator you have, but the most common fuels used are gasoline, fuel oil, diesel fuel, and propane. Natural gas is also an option if it is available.
